FAQ
What is a Nature Therapy Program?
A nature program integrates therapy with outdoor experiences in natural settings to engage participants physically, emotionally, and mentally. It aims to foster personal responsibility, emotional growth, and healthy relationships through challenging activities and therapeutic interventions.
What are the ages of the teens in Stepping Stones?
We accept teens between the ages of 16 to 19. We also consider the individual needs and readiness of each applicant.
How long is the Stepping Stones program?
Stepping Stones Nature Initiative is a 6-week program, but it can extend up to 8 weeks depending on the participant’s progress and engagement. Each participant’s treatment plan is tailored to their specific needs and goals.
What is the cost?
Stepping Stones Nature Initiative is an incorporated 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. This service covers all aspects of the program, including therapy, activities, accommodations, one year of follow-up with a licensed therapist, and meals. We will work together with you on a payment plan and scholarship plan to make this a reality for your teen.
Scholarships are available including fundraising platforms such as CauseMatch.
Is Stepping Stones a religious program?
We offer mehadrin kosher food and prayer options while respecting and accommodating diverse religious and cultural backgrounds. Our program creates a welcoming Jewish environment without any religious agenda. Our staff reflects the full spectrum of religious and traditional backgrounds, embodying the diversity within our community. We are Shomer Shabbat, providing all teens with the opportunity to observe Shabbat according to halacha if they choose.
What behaviors must a teen be exhibiting to consider attending the Stepping Stones Nature Initiative?
We support teens and their families facing a range of emotional, behavioral, psychological, and neuro-diverse challenges. Our approach is flexible and inclusive, designed to address a variety of needs in a therapeutic and open-minded manner.
Why send a teen to a nature program instead of finding them a mentor?
Nature programs provide a structured and immersive environment for personal growth and behavior change. Participants learn valuable life skills, build resilience, and develop positive coping strategies through outdoor experiences and therapeutic interventions.
Why send a teen to Stepping Stones instead of any other nature program?
SSNI is unique as the only Jewish English-speaking therapeutic nature program, offering Kosher facilities, a shomer Shabbat schedule, discharge planning, and ongoing support for graduates. Our program combines evidence-based therapy with cultural sensitivity and religious values.
What do participants do in a nature program?
Participants engage in daily hikes, group therapy sessions, individual therapy, and life skills development, fostering teamwork, trust, and resilience. They also learn farming skills, and nature survival skills and participate in therapeutic activities tailored to their needs.
Is the program co-ed?
Our program is co-ed, with separate living arrangements for male and female participants. While most therapy sessions are conducted separately, there is some limited interaction during group therapy and Shabbat meals, ensuring a balanced and respectful environment.
